Pension Education
Clear, accessible information to help members better understand pensions, retirement security, and the issues that shape pension advocacy.
Pension Education Matters
Pension systems can be complex, but members deserve clear information about the benefits they have earned, the systems that support them, and the policy decisions that may affect their retirement security.
PAG’s education resources are designed to make pension topics easier to understand, so members can stay informed, ask better questions, and participate more confidently in advocacy efforts.

Advocacy & LEGISLATION
Know Your Pension Protections
Illinois public pension protections are an important part of understanding why pension advocacy matters. For CPS educators and CTPF members, this constitutional language is a key starting point.
In simple terms, pension membership creates a protected contractual relationship. Understanding this protection can help members stay informed, ask stronger questions, and advocate more effectively for the benefits they have earned.

A retirement plan that provides a set monthly benefit, typically based on factors such as salary, years of service, and age at retirement.
A pool of money set aside to pay retirement benefits to eligible members. Pension funds are supported through contributions and investment earnings.
Money paid into a pension system by employees, employers, or other funding sources to help support current and future retirement benefits.
The retirement payments or other earned protections a pension system provides to eligible members, retirees, or beneficiaries.
A cost-of-living adjustment. A COLA may increase retirement benefits over time to help offset changes in the cost of living.
A person responsible for helping oversee a pension fund. Trustees may make decisions about governance, policies, investments, or administration, depending on the structure of the fund.
A measure of a pension fund’s assets compared with its long-term obligations. It helps show how well-positioned a fund is to meet promised benefits over time.
Laws or proposed laws that may affect pensions, retirement benefits, funding requirements, governance, or member protections.
Efforts to preserve the integrity, funding, and reliability of pension benefits that members have earned through their years of service.
A person or organization legally required to act in the best interests of others. In pension systems, fiduciaries help protect the interests of members, retirees, and beneficiaries.
